  • Incredibly Inspiring!

I attended my first handpan gathering in an old castle near Chicago. It was incredibly inspiring. There were workshops, performances and time to play with other handpan musicians. I was humbled by the amazing talent and I loved building the local midwest handpan community.

Huge thank you to the AWESOME organizers Addi Faerber Sarah Paz Hyde Maxwell Edison for bringing this community together. We deeply appreciate you. Major shoutout to Dan Mulqueen Jeremy Arndt Nancy Grzeszak Archer & Tripp, your performances literally brought me to tears. Your music is such a gift and it motivates me to keep growing as a musician. – Daniel D, 2023 Heartlander

  • a Great weekend!

Had a great weekend at Heartland HangOut - the first ever handpan gathering in Illinois, and it was held inside a castle!! It was great to see everyone and so many new faces. Lots of new friendships! There were many amazing performances and workshops and endless talent at the open mic night. But also - I won a Handpan?! I am feeling ever so gracious to win the Tacta Handpan giveaway — Ted M

  • Fun and JoY ... My favorite part Was...

Wow! What an incredible weekend. Words can not express all of the fun and joy that happened at Heartland Hangout! We are so grateful for this new gathering so close to home, right here in the Midwest!

My favorite part of the weekend was catching up with so many friends who have been a part of my life for so many years now, some who I’ve known for 14+ years. I don’t have pictures with everyone, because I forgot to take my camera out a lot being absorbed in the moment all weekend, and I certainly didn’t tag everyone, but thank you all for being a part of this incredible community, a part of Nancy and I’s lives, and for sharing your hearts with all of us at the Heartland Hangout!

Extra special thanks to the organizers also, Addi, Sarah, and Maxwell! — Jeremy Arndt

  • Stellar Time and Amazing Jams

Battery is running on empty from next to no sleep this weekend, but I would gladly continue for another two weeks straight if it meant more amazing jams and beautiful conversations with all of you incredible souls. Had an absolute stellar time this weekend with each and every one of you.

Additionally, I definitely want to share my appreciation for everyone's love and support for Rhythm Rest. This community truly is second to none, and it means the world to me to be accepted into it with open arms. – Matt Bigelow

Specializing in composed, percussion-driven pieces—often featuring handpans and other melodic instruments—More Than Physics bridges the worlds of rhythm and melody with innovation and emotional depth. Their performances are a fluid expression of connection, musicality, and energy that consistently leave audiences spellbound.

They’ve brought their sound to festivals and gatherings such as FOCOMX (Fort Collins Music Experiment), Arise Music Festival, Pantasia Handpan Gathering, and Steel Mountain Gathering. Their live performances have also graced stages at The Mishawaka Amphitheatre, The Lincoln Center, and the Otterbox Digital Dome Theatre at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, among many other venues across Colorado’s Front Range.

Beyond the stage, More Than Physics has cultivated a deep connection with their community through unique offerings like monthly live music and yoga classes, as well as sound journeys at Old Town Yoga. They’ve also been featured on NPR Live Sessions, further showcasing their innovative approach to modern percussion.

With roots in diverse musical backgrounds and international performance experience, Clint and Jonathan are dedicated, professional musicians whose mission is to bring people together through the transformative power of music.

Parker Horsch is a multi-instrumentalist from Michigan, based in Fort Collins, CO. His passion for music and his admiration of cultural tradition, from around the globe, has helped him blend modern and traditional rhythms and melodies to develop his own unique style.

  • SARAH PAZ HYDE is a Sound Alchemist, handpan musician, vocalist, calmUNITY organizer and visual artist currently based in Maryland. Her creative spirit derives from a multicultural upbringing and [w]holistic, spiritual approach to engaging life, fused with a deep-seeded connection to curiosity.

Sarah began her creative journey at the age of 4, with the violin as her first mode of expression. This early initiation cast a lifelong ripple effect in how she explores the world, through her artistry & spirit. Since then, she has evolved through various mediums, embracing photography, mixed media and graphic design, before returning to music and performance art.

In 2016, tucked away in the middle of the Mojave desert, Sarah Paz Hyde discovered the handpan — an instrument that brought her full circle to her life’s purpose, “aiding others in more deeply connecting their being to better balance within the body + mind + spirit.” Because of the handpan, she has been able to visit with and release from layers of her greatest limiting belief…fear.

Inspired by the catalystic instrument, in 2019, Sarah Paz began organizing her first handpan event – Super Bloom Women’s Gathering (SBWHG). Postponed in 2020, the idea simply laid dormant, until 2022. Ready and wanting to grow another gathering opportunity in the states, Sarah partnered to create Heartland Hangout in 2024, and looks forward to seeing what the future holds.

  • In 2008, I had an experience that changed my life forever. As I heard the sound of the handpan for the first time, something inside of me shifted. I couldn't quite grasp how, but I knew that everything I wanted to experience and understand was inside that sound. Nearly 2 decades later, the handpan remains a constant source of inspiration and guidance, reminding me to breathe, listen, and feel deeply.

I believe this art form offers an incredible gift to the world. It has the power to bring us together in creative community, where we learn, grow, and make beautiful music together. It's in these moments of connection and collaboration that we find the most joy and meaning in life.

I feel so lucky to share my love of the handpan, to hold space for exploration and growth, and to help others find their own path with this incredible instrument.

  • Dan Mulqueen is an American multi-instrumentalist from New Jersey. Dan's music is centered around an instrument called the "Handpan", an instrument created in 2001 in Switzerland. This instrument allows the player to create a rhythm and a melody simultaneously using only the hands.

Determined to push the limits of music revolving around this instrument, Dan's playing style is both beautifully melodic and intensely percussive. His stylistic approach invites the listener to experience elements of multiple genres of music all housed in one easily digestible format. While keeping the handpan as the centerpiece of his compositions, Dan's recordings also feature instruments such as upright bass, piano, electronic beats, guest vocals and more.

Dan has over 20 years of percussion experience in genres like hip-hop, rock, reggae, trip-hop, electronic, blues and latin. When asked about how these genres inspire his writing process, Dan responded "...it's important to me to take my favorite elements of multiple genres and blend them into something different. You'd be really surprised how open people are to music when they can identify with even a tiny element of it."

In addition to multiple solo tours across Australia, Europe and the USA, Mulqueen has also shared the stage with Shpongle for two sold out concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and collaborated with artists such as Mereba, Long ArmZebbler Encanti Experience and many more.

No matter what kind of music you're into, Dan has something in his music catalog for you. His music spans across multiple genres and grabs the attention of both casual music listeners and die-hard music lovers. So kick back, relax, and enjoy the sounds of Dan Mulqueen and the handpan!

New This Year

  • The Heart+Land Immersion sessions will take place at the same time as other Heartland Hangout workshops. You are not required, but very strongly encouraged to attend all Immersion sessions.

  • This Immersion is for players who have comfort with basic handpan technique including ding, tone fields, slaps, rhythm, groove and patterns.

If you’re unsure about your fit for the immersion, send a 1-minute video of you playing handpan to ConnectWithTheHeartland@gmail.com

  • A SPECIAL NOTE » Only 2025 Heartland Handpan HangOut attendees are eligible to attend the Deep Dive Immersion. No matter your goals or stylistic preference, the Heart+Land 8-hour Immersion will provide great benefits to your playing ... the handpan and in life.

HEART+LAND: A DEEP DIVE IMMERSION

Let's be honest, handpan festivals and the workshops that take place during them are incredible! But do you find yourself wanting to learn more? Having the opportunity to deepen your connection with the handpan … in a handpan immersion … while at a handpan festival sounds like the experience for you.

During the Heart+Land Immersion, a group of 15 players will spend 8 hours together, where you’ll learn various techniques to support your playing, grounding you in your unique flow so that you can play with greater comfort and confidence. You will learn:

  • common ways to start and build your own grooves & patterns while generating inspiration through improvisation, mindfulness & awareness techniques.

  • composition and introduce some ways to, tastefully, blend the technical and melodic elements of handpan playing.

  • specific grooves and fills, practice routines, phrasing, structure, and much more.

A full weekend pass must be purchased on order to attend the Immersion.

    ABOUT THE HEART+LAND IMMERSION

Oftentimes, during handpan workshops especially at handpan festivals, I’ve found myself having to choose between teaching more composition techniques OR more technical playing…percussive integration OR melodic structure…within the setting of a 3-day immersion, I feel super lucky to have the opportunity to show many aspects of handpan playing while also having ample time to answer your most detailed and specific questions.

A major topic in my teaching is connecting composition with technique. I’m very passionate about this and my approach for the Heart+Land Immersion is to integrate pre-planned lessons with time to answer questions that come up during our sessions. We also have the added bonus of being at the festival together for the weekend - so if any questions come to you in your playing/practice during the weekend, I’ll be around to answer whatever I can!

I am beyond excited for the opportunity to co-facilitate this immersion with my good friend, Peter Levitov, and to have the full support of Sarah, Addi and Max who are working tirelessly to put on another fantastic edition of Heartland Hangout! See you there!

After Discovering the handpan back in 2013, I knew that it was going to be a massive part of my life. By the fall of that same year, I was back enrolled in college and I went on to finish my Undergrad degree in Music business at Southern Illinois University. Handpan music was my drive throughout it all, and I would take my knowledge learned in classes to find ways to implement them on handpan, and creative ways to utilize them in my music. While I have been longtime friends of Isthmus, I began working at the shop in February 2021, and enjoy both building and working on special projects with the team!

In 2016, while visiting friends in the Mojave desert, a glowing campfire set the stage for Sarah to be mesmerized by something she had neither seen nor heard before … the handpan. Little did she know that big changes were being initiated. As her inner flames grew brighter and bolder, she was brought back to her first musical loves — the violin and the voice. Sarah uses her voice as a self-healing tool, alongside playing the handpan, violin, mandolin, RAVvast and frame drum. Having written a few pieces, she aims to share them in 2022. In addition to music, Sarah is also a visual artist — fine art, mixed-media photography & graphic design.

Four years after discovering the handpan, Sarah Paz Hyde went on, to organize the first Super Bloom Women’s Handpan Gathering set for a 2020 launch. Though the inaugural gathering was postponed, in 2022 it took flight and is in its 4th cycle.
